Migdal David, Jerusalem’s citadel, was first built by Herod the Great more than 2,000 years ago. The fortress has served throughout the centuries as Jerusalem’s primary defense against any attack from the north and the west, the city’s defensive weak points.
Successive conquerors have destroyed, rebuilt and renovated the structure numerous times in its history. The present form of the citadel dates back to the Mamluke period, with renovations and the addition of the tall, slender minaret dating back to Ottoman times. European visitors in the 19th century began referring to the towering minaret as “David’s Tower”.
The citadel has today been transformed into a museum celebrating the long and diverse history of Jerusalem. Visitors are treated to numerous archeological and historical exhibits as well as an audio-visual presentation tracing the city’s history.
