The Bible tells us that Abraham buried his late wife Sarah in the Cave of Machpelah. He insisted on paying for the cave, so that his descendants would have the right of burial there for eternity. And, indeed, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were laid there to rest; so were the matriarch Rebecca and Jacob?s wife Leah. (Genesis 23:17-20). Abraham and his family spent many years in and around Hebron. An ancient oak tree in Hebron is attributed to Abraham, who some believe planted it next to the spot where he pitched his tent. Located in the heart of Hebron, one of the oldest cities in the world, the large monumental tomb-complex built over the cave is holy for Jews, Christians and Muslims.
While it is reminiscent of a Herodian style, it was probably built during the earlier Hasmonean (Maccabean) era. With the ascent of Christianity a large basilica was built on the platform of the structure and later this same Church was turned into a Mosque and Madrasa (school). According to Jewish tradition, not only are almost all of the patriarchs and matriarchs buried there, but Adam and Eve as well. Passages from the Koran decorate the main hall today.
