Mission:
To defend the existence, territorial integrity and sovereignty of the State of Israel. To protect the inhabitants of Israel and to combat all forms of terrorism which threaten daily life.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are today one of the most highly trained, sophisticated fighting forces in the world. The IDF operates by a strict and effective security doctrine as well as a high code of ethics.
Born in 1948 with the creation of the State of Israel, the IDF was conceived as a result of the immediate need that existed to defend the newborn state against the invading Arab armies. The IDF was formed by combining the numerous Jewish defensive groups (Haganah, Irgun, Palmach, etc.) that existed in the Land at the time, an integration process that took more than six months to complete.
The IDF, and before 1948 the Haganah, owes its foundational combat doctrine to the efforts of a Bible-believing, gentile British army officer named Orde Wingate. Wingate was fully persuaded that the Zionist dream was the fulfillment of God’s promises to the Jews, and he longed for nothing more than to participate in that dream by training and establishing the Jewish army. His military genius and unorthodox tactics formed the basis for what was to become one of the most effective military establishments in the world.
