“Over there are the hills of the Golan, stretch out your hands and touch them. In their stalwart stillness they give the command to halt in splendid isolation Grandfather Hermon slumbers. A cool wind blows from the peak of whiteness”
These haunting lines were penned by the Modern Hebrew poetess Rachel while writing about the tallest and most impressive mountain in the region. At 2814 meters (9232 feet), the towering, sparkling white-covered Hermon peaks are almost double the height of Israel?s other mountains, and its melting snows feed the sources of the fabled River Jordan.
Mount Hermon is mentioned over a dozen times in the Bible, often in the psalmist?s poetic lines: “You created the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name” [Psalms 89:12], and yet again, “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!?It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore” [Psalms 133:1-3].
